Bring an item back, explain the problem and get a refund, exchange or voucher.
Mykola bought a winter jacket in a Munich department store. After three days the zip breaks. He goes back to the customer service desk (Kundenservice) with the jacket and the receipt. A return conversation has six parts: what you want, when you bought it, what is wrong, a refund question, an exchange option and your final choice.
MomentYou say what you want.
SayGuten Tag, ich möchte diese Jacke zurückgeben.
Whyzurückgeben is separable, but after möchte it stays together at the end.
MomentYou show the receipt.
SayIch habe sie letzte Woche hier gekauft. Hier ist der Kassenbon.
WhyPerfekt with haben: ich habe … gekauft; der Kassenbon is your proof.
MomentYou explain the fault.
SayDer Reißverschluss ist kaputt.
Whykaputt is the simplest A2 word for a defect.
MomentYou ask for a refund.
SayKann ich mein Geld zurückbekommen?
Whyzurückbekommen: separable verb in the infinitive after kann.
MomentYou ask about an exchange.
SayOder kann ich sie gegen eine andere Größe umtauschen?
Whygegen + Akkusativ: swap for another size.
MomentYou choose an option.
SayGut, dann nehme ich lieber einen Gutschein.
Whylieber = preferably; dann nehme ich closes the deal.

Perfekt for the past purchase: Ich habe die Jacke gekauft. Separable verbs: zurückgeben, umtauschen, zurückbekommen — after a modal verb they stay in one piece at the end (Ich möchte sie umtauschen). Pronoun sie replaces die Jacke (Akkusativ).
In Germany shops are not legally required to take back items that are not faulty, but many do within 14–30 days with a receipt. A defect (Mangel) gives you stronger rights. Keep the Kassenbon.
