Explain what you brought back, show the receipt, ask about the options, and choose a size. Practise six decisions after the guide.
Anya bought a jumper, but the size does not fit. She takes the item and the receipt back to the shop. Her first line is ‘Je voudrais rapporter ce pull.’ It tells the employee why she is there without assuming what the shop will offer. Next she says ‘La taille ne me va pas.’ This is a useful, plain explanation: the size does not suit her. She has not demanded an exchange or a refund yet; she has opened a conversation.
MomentYou brought the jumper back. What do you say first?
Say thisJe voudrais rapporter ce pull.
WhyJe voudrais is polite; rapporter says you brought the item back.
MomentThe size does not fit. How do you explain that?
Say thisLa taille ne me va pas.
WhyNe me va pas says the size does not suit you.
MomentYou have the receipt. What do you tell the employee?
Say thisJ'ai le ticket de caisse.
WhyTicket de caisse is the receipt from the shop.
MomentYou want to ask whether an exchange is available. What do you say?
Say thisEst-ce qu'un échange est possible ?
WhyÉchange asks about swapping the item; possible leaves the answer open.
MomentAn exchange is offered. You want size M. What do you say?
Say thisJe préférerais la taille M.
WhyJe préférerais politely names your preferred size.
MomentThe employee spoke too fast. How do you ask about your options?
Say thisPouvez-vous m'expliquer les options ?
WhyAsk for an explanation rather than guessing at an unfamiliar word.
| Moment | Say this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You brought the jumper back. What do you say first? | Je voudrais rapporter ce pull. | Je voudrais is polite; rapporter says you brought the item back. |
| The size does not fit. How do you explain that? | La taille ne me va pas. | Ne me va pas says the size does not suit you. |
| You have the receipt. What do you tell the employee? | J'ai le ticket de caisse. | Ticket de caisse is the receipt from the shop. |
| You want to ask whether an exchange is available. What do you say? | Est-ce qu'un échange est possible ? | Échange asks about swapping the item; possible leaves the answer open. |
| An exchange is offered. You want size M. What do you say? | Je préférerais la taille M. | Je préférerais politely names your preferred size. |
| The employee spoke too fast. How do you ask about your options? | Pouvez-vous m'expliquer les options ? | Ask for an explanation rather than guessing at an unfamiliar word. |
Then make the situation concrete: ‘J'ai le ticket de caisse.’ Ticket de caisse is the shop receipt. Ask ‘Est-ce qu'un échange est possible ?’ if another size would solve the problem. If the employee offers an exchange, ‘Je préférerais la taille M’ politely states the size you want. Je préférerais is a preference, not a demand. Keep the item and receipt where you can show them; a real object makes the exchange easier than a long explanation from memory.
If the employee lists options too fast, ask ‘Pouvez-vous m'expliquer les options ?’ You can then repeat back what you understood: ‘Donc, un échange est possible ?’ If a word is unfamiliar, ask for it again rather than agreeing blindly. The goal is to understand which option the employee offers for this item. If an exchange is possible, repeat the size you need and confirm it before leaving. The six choices below rehearse what to say at each moment.
