Ask for a slot, name a time that suits you, and confirm it back.
Taras has a toothache and calls a dental practice in Hamburg for the first time. He needs a new appointment: ask for one, check what is free, say which day suits him, negotiate the time, ask what to bring, and repeat the agreed slot. Reception speaks fast, so short fixed phrases in Sie-form help most.

‘Ich hätte gern …’ is the polite way to ask for something (Konjunktiv II of haben). Time phrases: am + day (am Dienstag), um + clock time (um halb neun — 8:30!). ‘Es passt mir’ takes the Dativ mir. Dates use ordinal numbers: der zwölfte.
Remember that ‘halb neun’ means 8:30, not 9:30. At the end, always repeat day, date and time — it is the cheapest way to avoid a wrong booking. Have your insurance card (Versichertenkarte) ready.
