Call, cancel politely, and get written confirmation — without booking a new slot.
Olga has a Thursday appointment at her GP's practice in Leipzig, but she has a fever and cannot go. She does not want a new date yet — she just needs to cancel cleanly. A good cancellation call has a fixed order: what you want (absagen), who you are and when the appointment is, a short reason, an apology, and a check on fees or confirmation. Everything is in Sie-form, because you are talking to reception staff.
MomentYou open the call and state the goal.
Whymöchte + absagen at the end: the purpose comes first, clearly.
MomentYou identify yourself and your slot.
WhyName plus time: reception needs both to find the booking.
MomentYou give a short reason.
WhyLeider + weil-clause: the verb (bin) moves to the end.
MomentYou apologise for the short notice.
Say thisEntschuldigen Sie bitte die kurzfristige Absage.
WhyEntschuldigen Sie bitte + Akkusativ: a polite Sie-form apology.
MomentYou ask about a fee.
Yes/no question with the modal first.
MomentYou ask for written confirmation.
Say thisKönnen Sie mir die Absage bitte per E-Mail bestätigen?
WhyKönnen Sie mir … bestätigen? A polite request with Dativ mir.

| You open the call and state the goal. | möchte + absagen at the end: the purpose comes first, clearly. |

The key verb is absagen, a separable verb: ‘Ich sage den Termin ab’, but with möchte it stays together at the end: ‘Ich möchte den Termin absagen.’ After weil the verb goes to the end: ‘…, weil ich krank bin.’ Use leider to soften bad news, and ‘Entschuldigen Sie bitte …’ for the apology.
Before you call, write down the date, time and your full name. Say the cancellation sentence first — receptionists are busy and want the purpose immediately. Ask about an Ausfallgebühr (cancellation fee) if you cancel less than 24 hours before.
