Ask your Vermieter clear questions about bills, rules, deposit and notice.
Iryna rents a flat in Dresden from a private landlord, Herr Schneider. Over the year she needs to talk to him about several things: a question about the utility bill, whether she may keep her bike in the cellar, when she gets her deposit back, and finally giving notice. Landlords expect Sie-form and a clear, polite request — and important things in writing.

| Moment | Say this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You introduce yourself as the tenant. | Guten Tag, Herr Schneider, hier spricht Ihre Mieterin aus Wohnung 3. | Ihre Mieterin aus Wohnung 3: the landlord instantly knows which flat. |
| You raise a question about the bill. | Ich habe eine Frage zur Nebenkostenabrechnung. | Eine Frage zu + Dativ: zur = zu der Abrechnung. |
| You ask for permission. | Darf ich mein Fahrrad im Keller abstellen? | Darf ich …? Modal verb for permission, infinitive at the end. |
| You ask about the deposit. | Wann bekomme ich meine Kaution zurück? |
Use ‘Darf ich …?’ to ask for permission and ‘Wann …?’ for time questions. ‘Eine Frage zu + Dativ’ (zur Abrechnung = zu der) introduces a topic. ‘Könnten Sie …?’ (Konjunktiv II) makes a request more polite than ‘Können Sie …?’. For notice: kündigen zum + date.
Key housing words: Miete (rent), Nebenkosten (utilities), Kaution (deposit), Kündigung (notice), Mietvertrag (contract). In Germany notice must be in writing, so a phone call is only the first step — always ask for confirmation schriftlich.
