Taras has started a new job in Cologne. His employer needs a German IBAN for his salary by the end of the month, so he books an appointment at a local Sparkasse. The adviser (Kundenberater) will ask why you need the account and check your ID and address registration. You should ask about fees, the card and how long activation takes.

A Girokonto is the everyday current account. Compare Kontoführungsgebühren (monthly fees); many online banks are free. Without a Meldebescheinigung some banks refuse — ask for a Basiskonto, which every bank must offer.
