Phone your manager, report sick, promise the Krankschreibung and hand over today's work.
Daniel works in accounting at a logistics firm in Bremen. He wakes up with a high fever and has to call his manager, Frau Hoffmann, before work starts. In Germany you must report sick (sich krankmelden) immediately and usually bring a doctor's note (Krankschreibung) from day one to four, depending on the contract. A professional call is short: who you are, that you are sick, a brief symptom, the sick note, how long, and who covers your urgent tasks.
MomentYou say who is calling.
Say thisGuten Morgen, hier ist Daniel Kowalski aus der Buchhaltung.
WhyName + aus der Abteilung: your manager knows at once who you are.
MomentYou report sick.
Say thisIch muss mich heute leider krankmelden.
Whysich krankmelden: reflexive, with müssen the verb stays together at the end.
MomentYou name one symptom.
Say thisIch habe seit gestern Abend hohes Fieber.
Whyseit + Präsens: the fever started yesterday and continues.
MomentYou mention the doctor and sick note.
Say thisIch gehe heute Vormittag zum Arzt und schicke Ihnen dann die Krankschreibung.
WhyTwo clauses with und: plan for the day plus the Krankschreibung.
MomentYou estimate how long.
Say thisVoraussichtlich bin ich bis Mittwoch krankgeschrieben.
Whyvoraussichtlich + bis: a cautious forecast.
MomentYou hand over an urgent task.
Say thisKönnten Sie Frau Berger bitten, das Kundengespräch um elf zu übernehmen?
Whybitten + zu-Infinitiv: asking someone to take over.
| Moment | Say this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You say who is calling. | Guten Morgen, hier ist Daniel Kowalski aus der Buchhaltung. | Name + aus der Abteilung: your manager knows at once who you are. |
| You report sick. | Ich muss mich heute leider krankmelden. | sich krankmelden: reflexive, with müssen the verb stays together at the end. |
| You name one symptom. | Ich habe seit gestern Abend hohes Fieber. | seit + Präsens: the fever started yesterday and continues. |
| You mention the doctor and sick note. | Ich gehe heute Vormittag zum Arzt und schicke Ihnen dann die Krankschreibung. |
Sich krankmelden is reflexive and separable: ‘Ich melde mich krank’, but ‘Ich muss mich krankmelden’. Seit + Präsens for symptoms that continue. Voraussichtlich (‘probably’) softens a forecast. ‘Jemanden bitten, etwas zu tun’ uses zu + infinitive: ‘Frau Berger bitten, … zu übernehmen.’
You do not have to tell your employer your diagnosis — a short symptom is enough. Call before your shift starts, not after. If you reach voicemail, leave name, department, the krankmelden sentence and a callback number, then send an email too.
